In the 19th century Australia went from struggling penal colony to a thriving community with a glowing future.
The life of George Matcham Pitt, grandson of pioneer settler Mary Pitt, spanned the greater part of that century. A larger than life character, master of rhetoric, fond of quoting from classic poets, opinionated and generous to a fault, friend to everyone other than politicians, GM - as he was known - went from humble farmer to landowner, auctioneer, Mayor and the founder of one of Australia's first and best-known stock and station agents Pitt, Son & Badgery.

His story is told, with love and admiration and occasional astonishment, by his great great granddaughter. It is the tale of the transformation of a nation, and a man, in the remarkable country called Australia.
