Every night, the moon makes its rounds above the city, greeting children by name. It calls to Mateo above the bakery, Zuri beside the park, and twins Nia and Noah at the same time. But when it reaches seven-year-old Luz Carter's window, the moon falls silent.
Afraid she has done something wrong or somehow become forgettable, Luz follows a loose thread of moonlight into the sleeping city. Abuela Marisol comes with her, carrying the steadiness of someone who knows that a name can become tangled without ever stopping its belonging. Along their dreamlike journey, the ocean remembers Luz's courage, streetlights remember her questions, birds remember her songs, and an old building remembers the laughter she left on its stairs.
Then Luz sees other children waiting at silent windows. The moon has not forgotten only her. Inside Abuela's small blue book, family names glow beside the stories that give them meaning - but some spaces have gone blank. Luz realizes the moon's memory is made from the names people entrust to one another. To restore it, she must stand beneath the enormous sky and begin speaking.
When the Moon Forgot My Name is a lyrical, warmly illustrated story about identity, ancestry, grandparents, community memory, and a child's power to help others feel seen. Written for ages five through nine, it offers rich read-aloud language, emotionally honest reassurance, Afro-Latina representation, and an ending that invites families and classrooms to share the stories carried inside their own names.
