"Skimming through the short passages, the floating dust shimmered like raining glitter as it caught the light . . . An overwhelming wave of curiosity washed over. Plenty of books have caught Etta's eye before, but none created such an urgency to belong to her."
Etta is relatively new to Northampton, but has already established what she believes is a good routine - especially after getting a slow start. She has a steady job, she procrastinates by playing online Scrabble, she visits a local bookshop and befriends the curmudgeonly owner, and she binges Buffy reruns.
Although content in her day-to-day, Etta's roommate insists these habits will turn her into a hermit. Panicked, Etta forces herself to connect with her co-worker, Cane, a spirited person always looking for an exciting tale. Together, they discover Vox Libri, a forgotten book of peculiar parables rumored to show the reader vivid, vaudevillian hallucinations. And for better or worse, the pair soon can't focus on anything else.
Everything that once kept Etta grounded dissolves as she finds any excuse to escape from the real world. In Cass Lauer's debut novel, Vox Libri, Etta must find her way back to regularity, or risks drifting forever.
