Pork is one of the most consumed meats globally, and with increasing numbers of pigs being farmed, research into their care and health is expanding rapidly. Raised in intensive mega-farms, grown in organic outdoor systems, kept as pets, and everything in-between, veterinarians can find themselves called to a wide range of pig husbandry systems.
With an accessible structure designed for use in the field, this book provides a general veterinary guide to treating common conditions in pigs. Fully updated throughout, the book addresses veterinary medicines and their uses, equipment, normal values and vital signs, vaccination, nutrition, poisoning, dermatology and more. New for this edition, it considers:
-Surgical techniques in-situ within the disease systems where this care may be necessary.
-New vaccine technologies, particularly for African Swine Fever and oral vaccinations.
-General advancements in the field, such as extended information around salmonellosis, diagnostic tests, and radiographic and ultrasonographic techniques.
-Increased focus on pig welfare, particularly around slaughter and diseases of the neurological system.
Worldwide disease conditions, both notifiable and zoonotic, are also covered in detail. Written as a handy how-to reference for farm animal veterinarians, this book is also a valuable resource for students and anyone interested in pig veterinary treatment.
