Unstitched tells the story of a librarian, Brett Ann Stanciu, who embarks on a journey to understand the impact of addiction, particularly opioid misuse, on her community. After a man, rumored to be a heroin addict, repeatedly breaks into the small-town library she runs and eventually dies by suicide, Stanciu is struck by her lack of understanding about addiction. This prompts her to seek out perspectives from people in recovery, treatment providers, law enforcement, and community leaders. The book shifts readers' perspectives from blame to empathy, encouraging a deeper understanding of addiction as a disease, and highlights the importance of compassion and community support in addressing the opioid crisis.
