About

You already know.

The Sunday night dread. The marriage that doesn't fit. The life you built and can no longer sustain. The glass you pour a little earlier every night.

You got what you wanted.

You should be happy, right? Grateful, even?

Tomorrow. Next week. After (insert any time but now).

You were handed a script for a good life by every parent, school, church, and company that told you what to want. They trained you how to be from the outside in. Together, they operate like a cult. Now the algorithm runs the same script. It never sleeps. It was built that way.

This script became the stories you tell yourself.

You figured it was you. So you tried to fix you. (Yes, another book. I bought them all too.) Every fix agreed with the stories. None of it worked.

uncult is the practice of being human.

The way out is the way you got in, one minute at a time. You learn, maybe for the first time, how to keep a promise to yourself. You write your own script. When you lose it, you return.

You get your life back.

The practice starts with seeing. You'll name the Theys, the voices you absorbed long before you were old enough to question them, and the stories they became. You'll find the habits that keep you inside those stories: numbing, attaching, avoiding. And you'll look at the one record that doesn't lie, which is where your minutes go. How you spend your time is how you built the life you have, and it's how you build the next one.

From there, it's practice. Small, daily, and done in the minutes you already have. Every minute gets spent choosing, practicing, or telling yourself the truth, whether you're paying attention or not. uncult teaches you to pay attention. And when the story cracks, which the book calls the Glitch, you'll recognize it for what it is: the place where your life is signaling that it's ready to happen.

This book is for the person who did everything they were told and still feels like they're living someone else's life. The one at midlife asking whose life this is. The one who wants out of the rat race and doesn't know what comes after. If you've read the self-help, done the retreat, and ended up right back where you started, this is for you.
There's no guru here and no belief required. uncult is a secular practice, written the way people talk: Pema Chödrön meets Anthony Bourdain.

Courtney Thompson spent twenty years running the script in corporate America. She built a whole life to it. Then she built the practice to get out. She lives in Royal Oak, Michigan, with her son and three dogs.
