About

Fourteen-year-old Petey Waggoner grew up in the small town of Nixa, Missouri in the idyllic 1950's Midwest. Never quite feeling like he belonged, to his hometown or his family, he takes a back seat to his older brother, Randy, in almost every manner. One day, Petey makes a decision to commit a petty crime that doesn't seem so petty at the time and, rather than face the consequences, he resolves to hitchhike west and take his chances on the open road. He hoodwinks a handsome passing stranger, one Tucker Harrison, into taking him as far as Joplin - weaving a few tall tales along the way. The two form a rather odd sort of friendship and somehow Petey ends up going a lot further with Tucker than Joplin. As their adventure unfolds, they have a run-in with the law and Tucker is seriously injured in the getaway. At that point the two of them decide they are in it for the long haul and, although Petey has a schoolboy crush on his older companion, Tucker instead plays the role of big brother and brings the kid along with him to Wyoming where the two begin a new life together. After a few years of being partners - in all ways but one - Petey is attacked and nearly killed. From that day forward the dynamic of their relationship shifts. The two find absolution from their past mistakes by doing right by others - and doing what they ultimately know is right for themselves.
