Quick-thinking Ned and shy, handsome Tom meet in the Professor's study in 1861, shortly after Tom's arrival at Harvard. Tom's mother is a woman the Professor had loved and lost, so the crusty middle-aged man follows the young man's college career with interest. Ned and Tom become friends, then close friends, then roommates. Then the declaration of war throws these two young men into a world they do not understand.
