About

Winning isn't just about talent-it's about how you think.
Too many young athletes fail to reach their full potential not because they lack ability-but because they never develop the mental skills needed to perform at their best when it matters most. The athletes who succeed are the ones who can stay confident under pressure, recover from mistakes, manage nerves, and keep competing when things get hard.
The problem is that those skills are easier said than done-and most young athletes are never taught how to develop them.
That's why I wrote Think Like A Winner.
If you've ever struggled with confidence before games, been too hard on yourself after mistakes, or felt pressure from competition, coaches, teammates, or social media, this book was written for you.
This practical mindset guide for athletes ages 12–17-and the parents and coaches who support them-teaches the mental skills young athletes need to succeed in sports and life.
Through engaging stories about athletes facing real challenges, readers learn how to:
- build confidence
- handle anxiety and pressure
- overcome self-doubt
- develop mental toughness
- stay motivated through challenges
Drawing from proven sport psychology strategies, the book provides practical tools athletes can use immediately to:
- stay focused under pressure
- bounce back after mistakes and losses
- handle criticism and limited playing time
- manage social media distractions
- become stronger teammates and leaders
- set meaningful goals
Worksheets, checklists, and discussion questions help athletes apply these lessons directly to their own sport and everyday life.
For parents and coaches, Think Like A Winner offers practical, age-appropriate strategies to help young athletes build confidence, resilience, emotional strength, and character-both in sports and beyond.
I'm Dr. Dan Gould, a sport psychology specialist and former Director of the Michigan State University Institute for the Study of Youth Sports. I've worked with athletes at every level-from young competitors to Olympic athletes, the U.S. Ski Team, and NASCAR race teams-and spent my career studying what helps athletes succeed when the pressure is highest.
Think Like A Winner helps young athletes develop the confidence, resilience, and mindset needed to thrive in sports, school, and beyond-because success starts in the mind.
