I misjudged the ball as it rolled to the fence... it completely disappeared and reappeared."
At eighteen, Tom Perski was a popular high school athlete with dreams of the diamond and a bright future ahead. Then, the world began to blur. A devastating diagnosis of Stargardt Macular Dystrophy-a rare genetic condition leading to legal blindness-shattered his reality.
There's No Vision, Like Low Vision is a raw and deeply moving memoir that chronicles a decades-long journey through the shadows of vision loss. From the "torturous" medical tests of the 1970s to the heartbreaking moment he handed over his driver's license, Perski captures the profound grief of losing independence and the "mask of the popular guy" he wore to hide his fear.
But this is not just a story of loss-it's a memoir of finding clarity. It is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the unexpected mentors-like a basketball star friend and a Japanese gerontology professor-who helped him see a new path. Perski details how he transformed his personal struggle into a global mission, founding life-changing organizations and becoming a leading voice in low-vision rehabilitation.
Filled with humor, heartache, and "quirky miracles," this memoir offers: • A Firsthand Account of Living with Macular Degeneration: An intimate look at the emotional landscape of vision impairment, from denial and anger to eventual joy and purpose. • Inspiration for the Journey: How faith and a "creative spirit" can turn a perceived weakness into a source of immense strength. • A Guide for Families and Professionals: Practical insights into the psychological hurdles faced by those with low vision and the importance of balanced family support. Whether you are navigating your own vision loss, supporting a loved one, or seeking a story of triumph over adversity, Tom Perski's journey is a powerful reminder that our challenges do not define us-they connect and empower us to live life to the fullest.
