In the rugged Texas Hill Country, Deputy Adam Cash is assigned to reopen the cold case of a missing woman, a beloved teacher who vanished a year earlier. What begins as a simple review becomes far more dangerous when the son of a powerful Congressman disappears while searching for a legendary Spanish silver mine on nearby ranch land.
Cash joins forces with FBI Special Agent Yolanda Deaver, and a disturbing pattern emerges. The missing victims call their families to say they are unharmed. The words sound right. The voices do not. Each message is flat, hollow and unsettling, as if spoken by someone who only knows how to sound human.
When a respected Comanche historian is abducted while studying an ancient marker tree, Cash follows a trail that leads him deep beneath the Hill Country limestone into a hidden cavern where the killer keeps his secrets, his trophies and his victims.
Fans of Craig Johnson's Longmire and C. J. Box's Joe Pickett novels will feel right at home with The Voice Thief, an atmospheric thriller that blends small-town tension, Western grit and a haunting mystery rooted deep in the Texas Hill Country.
