This novel is set in Mexico, the mysticism and magic of which are fully appreciated by Captain Forest as he and his man Jose are travelling on horseback to witness the annual Fiesta of the corn. We quickly learn that Captain Forest has spent a long time in this region and that he owes his life to the magnificent chestnut horse that he rides.
