About

"The Rivals" is a comedy of manners written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan and first performed in 1775. The play is set in Bath, England, and tells the story of several characters who are all in pursuit of love and marriage.

The central plot revolves around the wealthy and fashionable Captain Jack Absolute, who is in love with Lydia Languish, a young woman who is obsessed with romantic novels and desires to marry a man with a tragic past. To win her heart, Jack disguises himself as a poor soldier and presents himself to Lydia as Ensign Beverley, a penniless suitor with a heart of gold.

However, Jack's plan is complicated by the interference of his father, Sir Anthony Absolute, who is determined to marry him off to a wealthy heiress, and by the arrival of Lydia's aunt, Mrs. Malaprop, a comic character famous for her misuse of words.

As the play progresses, misunderstandings and miscommunications abound, and the characters become embroiled in a series of romantic entanglements and mistaken identities. "The Rivals" is a witty and entertaining satire that pokes fun at the foibles of the upper class, while also exploring themes of love, pride, and the search for identity.
