The Palace Guard is a gripping psychological and military thriller about identity, memory, betrayal, and secrets buried for decades.
When a mysterious man is discovered nearly frozen in an ice-fishing shack on Sauk Lake, Wisconsin, he has no identification, no clear history, and seemingly no idea who he is. He speaks German, calls himself Albrecht Bear, and appears convinced that he is connected to a medieval German prince. Yet the evidence surrounding him suggests something entirely different.
Under psychiatric examination, fragments of another identity begin to surface. His real name may be Joseph Fazio, a former military cadet and Special Forces soldier whose past appears to have been deliberately erased. His memories return not as a coherent story, but as scattered images, places, people, military experiences, and terrifying encounters. The discovery of questionable military records only deepens the mystery.
As Dr. Paul Fritz works to unlock Fazio's fractured memories, the investigation reaches far beyond a psychiatric hospital. Vietnam, East Germany, Cuba, Soviet intelligence, military operations, political unrest, secret identities, and hidden networks begin to converge. The deeper Fazio remembers, the more dangerous the truth becomes.
Was his identity destroyed by trauma-or deliberately erased? Why was he in East Germany? What happened in Cuba? Who altered his military records? And why do powerful people seem determined to keep the past buried?
The Palace Guard is a layered thriller that moves between psychological investigation, military history, espionage, and international conspiracy, challenging the reader to piece together Fazio's identity alongside the characters who are trying to recover it.
