American Norvin Blake travels to the island of Sicily to attend the wedding of his good friend, Count Martel Savigno. Martel refuses to give in to the extortion of the local Mafia which leads to a tragic event the night before the wedding. The book then follows Norvin over the next couple of years as he tangles with the Mafia in order to uncover the true identity of the mysterious "Belisario Cardi", the don who ordered the hit.
