About

Some confessions should never be heard.
On a storm-lashed night in Bellwether, an unknown man enters St. Augustine Catholic Church and asks Father Michael Carroway to hear his confession. Behind the screen, the stranger describes a murder committed twenty-three years earlier-with details only the killer could know.
He has come to reveal something else, too.
Before Father Carroway can act on what he hears, he is murdered. When former homicide detective Gabriel Mercer arrives at the church, he finds that the dying priest has left three words:
MERCER KNOWS WHY.
Gabriel has spent years questioning the death of his mother, Ruth. Her death was ruled an accident, but the priest's final message offers a reason to look again-and a warning that someone still has something to lose.
Working with Detective Delana Vasquez, Gabriel follows the evidence into Bellwether's past: a journalist's unsolved murder, a condemned clinic, altered records, and a waterfront redevelopment whose promises conceal a history of exploitation. The men who shaped the city's public life have also helped determine which deaths were investigated, which witnesses were believed, and which stories disappeared.
Now the clinic is scheduled for demolition. Evidence Ruth left behind may soon be destroyed, and Gabriel must decide whom he can trust before the people guarding those secrets reach it first.
Each recovered record brings him closer to the work his mother was doing-and to the danger she understood. To discover why Father Carroway was killed, Gabriel must piece together what Ruth knew, what she tried to preserve, and why her son has become a threat.
Set in a rain-darkened river city, THE LAST CONFESSION is an atmospheric mystery of murder, institutional corruption, and a son's search for the truth about his mother. It explores the cost of silence, the limits of loyalty, and the courage required to place evidence in the hands of someone who will listen.
