For decades, the ketogenic diet-which shifts the body's metabolism from burning glucose to burning fat, lowering blood sugar and insulin and resulting in a metabolic state known as ketosis-has been used to successfully manage pediatric epilepsy. More recently, it has been used by the Paleo community as a weight loss strategy. Now research suggests that a ketogenic diet, in conjunction with conventional treatments, also offers new hope for those coping with cancer and other serious disease.
With endorsements from leading researchers and oncologists, The Ketogenic Kitchen offers more than 250 recipes, as well as meal plans and comprehensive scientific information about the benefits of a ketogenic diet, with sensible advice to help readers through periods of illness, recovery, and treatment.
This North American edition has been updated to include U.S. customary units of measure appearing side-by-side with metric measures.
"An excellent resource. I'm sure it is going to help many, and I couldn't recommend it more hardily."-Dr. Joseph Mercola "There are many 'keto' cookbooks out there, but The Ketogenic Kitchen was specifically created for cancer patients by two people who have fought off cancer themselves. Many of the recipes were written to support the very low carbohydrate limits, which lower blood sugar and raise ketone levels quickly, an important goal for those diagnosed with cancer. This book will help so many patients and medical professionals learn how to implement the diet correctly, and it should be a standard in every oncology ward."-Ellen Davis, MS, www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com
"Public interest is increasing but clinical trials exploring the effect of lower-carbohydrate or ketogenic diets are slow to get off the ground, and clinical support, experience and understanding can be frustratingly hard to come by. Patricia and Domini's book explains the precautions, the practicalities, the theories and the uncertainties and will be of value to individuals, their families and the clinicians supporting their treatment pathway. Thank you, Patricia and Domini, for your considerable endeavours in creating such an informative and deliciously practical book."-Sue Wood, Specialist Ketogenic Dietician, Matthew's Friends Clinics, UK
"Based on a plethora of preclinical data, trials are underway from the US to Germany. The benefits of a ketogenic diet have already been shown for weight loss and metabolic improvement, and we are hopeful that similar benefits will be seen in the cancer world. While the diet has been shown to synergise with standard therapies like radiation therapy in preclinical studies, recent studies are underway to test this in humans.
Unable to wait for these results, many have chosen to engage in a ketogenic diet during their cancer treatment. It is our job to make sure this is done safely and effectively, and The Ketogenic Kitchen is a vital resource that we have been lacking in the clinic. This is a great source of information for both patient and physician, helping to ensure that the diet is done safely with a variety of healthy, delicious and nutrient-dense foods."-Dr. Colin E.
