Darrell Standing is a university professor incarcerated in San Quentin State Prison for murder. The prison officials attempt to break him through the use of a torture device called "the jacket," which is a canvas jacket that can be tightly bound to compress the whole body and induce angina. However, Standing attempts to withstand the torture by becoming entranced. In this trance state, he travels amongst the stars and experiences glimpses of past lives.
