Everyone belongs somewhere. At least, that's what they're told.
Across a vast archipelago, people are sent to islands designed to hold what society no longer knows how to live with: addiction, grief, identity, violence, exploitation, certainty, silence. Each island is governed by its own logic, its own language of care and correction, its own explanation for why separation is necessary.
There are no public trials, no dramatic punishments. The system does not rely on spectacle or force. Instead, it presents itself as reasonable, humane, and efficient. Placement is framed as protection. Distance is framed as healing. Belonging is framed as something that can be assigned.
As ferries continue to arrive and classifications remain unquestioned, the structure reveals its true power not through cruelty, but through permanence - and through the quiet confidence that everyone can be sorted, named, and sent where they fit best.
The Islands is a speculative literary novella about systems of containment and the fragile line between care and control. It explores how societies manage discomfort by categorizing people, how language softens the reality of exile, and how belonging becomes a condition rather than a choice.
Written with restraint and emotional precision, The Islands is not a story about rebellion or escape. It is a story about acceptance - of systems, of labels, of places we are told are meant for us - and the silence that follows when no one asks whether placement is the same as belonging.
