The Girls (1921) by Edna Ferber is a lesser-known but insightful novel that explores themes of friendship, aging, and the roles of women in society. It follows the lives of two lifelong friends, focusing on their relationships, ambitions, and struggles in a world that often limits women's choices. Ferber, known for her sharp wit and keen social observations, presents a story that delves into the expectations placed on women, particularly in terms of marriage, independence, and societal roles. Like much of her work, The Girls highlights her ability to create strong female characters who challenge conventions.
