Practical second-year, Emma Curran, is welcomed into the seductive, debaucherous world of the University's oldest secret society: that is, until her participation in a centuries-old tradition changes her for good and exposes her to the twisted system that keeps this old boys club on top; for readers of Ninth House, Atlas Six, Babel, and The Maidens.
Emma Curran is a self-effacing, pragmatic second-year at England's most ancient university. But the layers of privilege that wind around its dreaming spires and shadowed libraries have barely grazed her. She is worlds away from the University's inner circle, with its wealth and snobbery. What's more, she has little interest.
Until she wins an exciting research fellowship, and is ushered into the glittering debauchery of the University elite. There, beneath the roaring parties and fizzing champagne, she discovers a shadowy presence. The Turnbull Club, the University's most formidable secret society, has turned out centuries of young men destined to rule. Emma soon finds herself swept up by the splendor of it all, and swept into the arms of the Turnbulls' leader: the supremely eligible, supremely devastating Jasper Balfour.
But every glamorous soirée, expensive dinner, and historic ritual lead her to the night the Turnbulls propose a dark little game: a fox hunt. The women run. The men chase. And Emma finds herself fleeing for her life through the streets, hunted by the boy she loves. Because the Turnbulls have a secret. Centuries of power cannot come from nowhere. An ancient magic secures their right to rule, in exchange for a sacrifice. And they have chosen their mark.
But magic is tricksy. It has other plans for Emma. She wakes in The Night City, an enchanting but dangerous world hidden in the shadows. But that salvation has come at a cost. Emma has been transformed. No longer mortal, she's become something beastly. And as she quickly learns, she owes the Night City a great debt. Soon, Emma must not only master the rules of this strange place, but seek her revenge, topple the Turnbulls, and ultimately, save herself.
