The bottom line is, fraud is a crime that can happen to anyone, given the right con artist and a victim with the right set of circumstances.
"Confessions of a Con Artist," as told by Doug Shadel, AARP Magazine, October/November 2012, 55.
The Players:
Aristotle De Silva: "My dad thinks that the real winners in life are the people who can outsmart their opponents by whatever means they come up with-short of bodily harm, of course. He says the mental antagonists of the world do a service to humanity by keeping everyone on their toes. They drive growth in individuals and progress in the world."
Garrison Richards: If he went along with this, it could mean that he, the son of a marine colonel and brother of a nanotechnology scientist trying to make a positive contribution to the world, would become a criminal. But weren't there a lot of people walking around out there who made their livings by deceiving people? He thought of politicians and advertising professionals as examples. It didn't seem to him that either one of those types backed away from pulling the wool over their targets' eyes to get what they wanted. Were these people criminals too?
Jillian Dawson: I didn't know on this day, as I celebrated the beauty around me, there would soon be another kind of growth germinating in a distant part of the country that would creep across the miles, wrap around the framework of our lives, and choke out everything that wasn't itself.
Dean Dawson: "Dean left his hand on my shoulder as he looked into my eyes. "Really, Sweetheart, a large part of business success is being ready to grab good opportunities when they come your way." He laughed even louder. "Nothing bad is going to come of this and I'm not going to end up in jail. So, how about feeding Foxy and letting me take you to dinner. If you think you can handle it, we can even talk more about it while we eat."
