One call. Twelve murders. One clue a day. A telephone rings in a rain-soaked Manhattan office on Halloween night, 1965. The caller promises twelve deaths between now and Christmas, and one clue each day to stop them. Dominic Kerrigan, a former homicide detective turned private eye, has spent years trying to forget the case that ended his career. Now a stranger on the line knows his name, his number, and what he did. The clues are fair. The killer keeps his word. And the twelve who are marked have only one thing in common. With a city of eight million, a blackout on the way, and a police lieutenant who wants him off the case, Dom has fifty-five days and only a telephone to follow the voice back to its source. A fair-play, period mystery told with 1965 technology, slang and streets: rotary phones, party lines, toll tickets, answering services, phone booths and a city that is about to lose its lights.
