First published in 1927 (public domain), 'The Demon Lover' is the story of Lucas, whose desire for his lover Veronica (and his knowledge of the Black Arts) allows him to bridge the gulf between Life and Death. Dion Fortune's exciting, atmospheric tale allows her to tackle a vast swathe of esoteric themes: occult fraternities, the dangers of the Left Hand Path, karma and reincarnation, the reality of vampirism, and society's pressing need for a spiritually balanced relationship between men and women. The book works well on both levels: as a page-turning adventure and as an informative introduction into many aspects of the Western Mystery Tradition.
