Maren Schulz has spent four years as Thessaly's most talented and least acknowledged cartographer. She has an unfinished atlas her dead father left behind, an engagement she's been thinking about for eight months, and a theory about a northern coastline that no one in her guild will let her prove. Under Old Law, a Varek male who can carry a woman from her bed without causing her harm has claimed her as his wife. She has until the first snow to speak his name and bind herself to him-or refuse, and go free. The law is ancient. The loophole is real. And Draven Kal-Vor, war-chief of the Kalvor clan, is very large and extremely patient and has been watching her window for three nights before he comes through it. Maren doesn't frighten easily. What she does is pay attention. To the terrain, to the man walking beside her through it, to the way a closed coastline can turn out to be passable if you know where to look. She has eight weeks to decide. The Cartographer's Window is the first book in The Varek Series.
