Welcome to Craig County, Virginia, where love, mystery, and Southern charm intersect on The Back Steps. Newlyweds Charlie and Judy return from a dream honeymoon to a quiet life in New Castle-until a near-miss on a mountain road hints that not all is as peaceful as it seems. With family close by and a house to make their own, the couple settles into married life-but domestic bliss quickly gives way to suspense when a stranger breaks into their home, and Judy must rely on her law enforcement training to defend herself.
Meanwhile, private detectives JF and June are navigating their own new marriage and business partnership. When they inherit a mansion and discover a possible pregnancy, life takes an exciting turn-but not without its complications. Their latest clients, a suspicious husband and an equally anxious wife, each seek to uncover secrets about the other, leading to revelations neither expected.
As two love stories unfold in parallel, The Back Steps paints a vivid picture of rural life, family bonds, and the quiet tensions that sometimes brew in small towns. With an engaging mix of romance, mystery, humor, and heart, Jimmy Zeigler's eighth entry in the Back Road Mysteries series offers readers more than just a whodunit-it delivers a heartwarming tale of resilience, relationships, and the strength of women at the center of it all.
Whether you're returning to Craig County or visiting for the first time, The Back Steps welcomes you with a cast of memorable characters, relatable conflicts, and a rich setting that feels like home.
