In the past, countless utopias have been conceived as blueprints for a better world. A utopia often begins with an author's individual resistance to the existing system and can develop into a fully-fledged alternative. In contrast, dystopias paint a bleak picture of the consequences of new developments in society. In our current society, we often see a hybrid of utopia and dystopia. This book refers to this as "syntopia," in which utopia and dystopia, as it were, merge into one another. For any given utopia, what is heaven for one person may be hell for another.
