This surviving medieval document, written by Pope John XIX, addresses a contentious dispute between Urso, Patriarch of Grado, and Popo, Patriarch of Friuli. It recounts how political and ecclesiastical tensions escalated amid Venetian unrest, leading to violent acts including the desecration of monasteries and theft of treasures. Despite efforts to confirm privileges and reconcile differences through papal intervention, the conflict persisted with broken promises and denials of rightful claims. The text emphasizes the importance of preserving historical records for future judgment and ecclesiastical order, underscoring the complex interplay between secular and religious powers in medieval northern Italy.
