A chance encounter with a hawk on Exmoor sends two children on an adventure across the threshold of time. Caught up in the intrigue of desperate slaves, who help and protect them, the children find themselves pitched in conflict against a pompously comical Roman official who, behind the mask, is both evil and deadly. He discovers the slaves secret and there is a thrilling battle to escape not only from his clutches but also from one of the most devastating natural disasters of the ancient world.
