Soldiers Cook: Recipe for Resilience is not just a war story-it's a story of survival, service, and the quiet power of caring for others when everything is falling apart.
Master Sergeant (Ret.) Debra "Debbie" Mendez spent nearly 30 years in the Army, serving from mechanic to leader, from field kitchens to the front lines of war. From the chaos of Abu Ghraib to the uncertainty of the Baghdad Green Zone, she carried one mission above all others: take care of her soldiers.
But behind the uniform was another battle-one shaped by trauma, leadership challenges, and a previously diagnosed bipolar disorder that would test her resilience in ways no battlefield ever could.
Through moments of conflict, failure, leadership, and hard-earned growth, Debbie reveals what it really means to serve:
• Standing your ground when systems fail
• Choosing integrity when it costs you
• Leading even when you feel like you're breaking
• And finding purpose in the smallest acts of care
At its heart, this is a story about food-not just as nourishment, but as connection. Whether feeding soldiers under mortar fire or creating moments of normalcy in a war zone kitchen, Debbie shows how a simple meal can restore morale, dignity, and hope.
This powerful memoir is for:
• Veterans and military families
• Leaders who carry unseen burdens
• Anyone navigating resilience, identity, and purpose
• Readers looking for truth, not perfection
Resilience isn't found in medals or moments of glory. It's built day by day-in quiet decisions, in showing up, and in taking care of others when it matters most.
