About

This fictional novel is inspired by the real-life double murder of Vina (16) and Eky (19) in Cirebon in 2016, a tragedy that exposed connections between motorcycle gangs, police corruption, and systemic failures in Indonesia's criminal justice system. The story centers on Egi, the leader of the Black Cobras motorcycle crew, whose obsession with Vina is fueled by her rejection of him and her relationship with Eky, a former gang member who chose a different path. Egi views the rejection as a challenge to his power. On August 27, 2016, Egi leads approximately 30 Black Cobras members in a planned "ritual" of extreme violence. Eky is brutally beaten and then stabbed to death by Egi in front of Vina. Vina is subsequently raped in turns by eleven of the perpetrators, and severely beaten, with her hand crushed by a motorcycle tire. The bodies are then dropped from the Jalan Perjuangan Overpass to stage the incident as a fatal traffic accident. The narrative continues through the investigation led by Detective Inspector Surya Wibowo, who rejects the official "accident" narrative despite being hampered by political intervention and corruption. Although Vina, before she dies two days later, whispers testimony naming Egi and the Black Cobras, the case is officially closed as a traffic accident.Years later, a cooperating former Black Cobra member provides a breakthrough, leading to the 2018 arrests of Egi, his lieutenant Kasdul, and five other senior members. They are convicted of murder and rape in 2020 and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the story remains "The Unfinished". Key fugitives, Andi and Dani, remain at large. Furthermore, the case draws renewed scrutiny in 2024 when a third fugitive, Pegi Setiawan (Perong), is released after a successful praperadilan (pre-trial) motion rules the evidence against him insufficient.SHADOWS ON THE OVERPASS is a powerful story about destroyed love, organized violence, and the continuous struggle of idealists against impunity and corruption
