:One hundred and seven years after the Sundimmer burned seven suns, the Compact stands on a single promise: no office and no inherited name holds power the law has not granted. Keal Varilian keeps that promise. Keal wears the Guard's uniform and has spent a career proving that a grandfather's order died with the grandfather who gave it. Lyran Varilian enforces it. As Seal Witness to the Chamber of Continuance, Lyran reviews the power other people hold and files every finding where no authority can recall it. Delvin Varilian broke it three years ago and never told either of them why. Beneath a plateau on Arilian Prime, a sealed installation has waited a century for someone with the right blood to open it. The founders wrote one family's name into its access architecture. The installation does not care what the Compact believes about inherited power. The record under that stone can unmake the Compact's founding promise, or confirm something worse: the family that gave the order at Sundermere is the family the founders chose to guard what came after it. Something built to outlast both the law and the blood is about to open.
