This Self Help Book on National Security is for those that are looking for a fun, light, and entertaining introduction to the subject. But, don't be fooled, this is advanced thinking in national security. Even if you fancy yourself an expert on the subject, there's a lot here for you too. True to its title, Searching for True Community, is what national security is all about. It's how we promote diversity in our communities and prevent that diversity from turning to divisiveness. As much as we associate planes, tanks and soldiers to our national security, it's really about how we influence our communities and how our communities influence us. National Security is a behavioral science.
It's odd to think of national security along side social work, sociology and the other behavioral sciences. But, in this book I make the case that they have a lot in common. Communities are communities, no matter the size, that accomplish great things together but are challenged when the moral hazard of our individual desires gets in the way of teamwork. And, the community of nations - the some 200 nations on Earth - is no different from any other community that sees the value in teamwork but can easily fracture when community norms intrude on our values. We're human, after all, and we are emotionally connected to our values. There's only so much of our identity that we're willing to give up just to be part of a team.
In fact, you are already a national security expert because you attend PTA meetings, are members of homeowner associations, joined social clubs or played on sports teams and you know what motivates us often makes it hard to be good teammates. You know our communities shape us and we shape our communities as well. You're already a national security expert, you just don't know it yet.
So whether you are looking for a easy introduction or an old pro looking for another perspective, this book is for you.
