HOLLY the head cheerleader with the movie star looks tries to get BRET, the son of the fabulous rich movie star, to take her to the prom. Bret knows it is not about him, but about his father's money and ignores her not so subtle advances. Because of Holy's promiscuous reputation, Bret's friends cook up a plan to teach her a lesson. They encourage Bret to ask MELONY , AKA SCARECROW, the underdeveloped, skinny, bullied, girl at school to the prom. At first Bret objects but he gives in in ordered to teach Holly a lesson. At the prom Holly humiliates Melony so fiercely that Bret and Melony leave, despite his best friends, VICTOR and BROOKE (who are going together) trying to protect Melony. To console Melony Bret takes her to the fancy country club his family belongs to. At the club Bret introduces Melony to his stepmother Hailey, also a movie star. Despite the fact that she is not much older than Bret, Hailey has raised him since he was nine and has become his real mom. Hailey takes an immediate liking to Melony, and does everything in her power to help make the situation right , filling the gap Melony has after her own mom died of breast cancer. Hailey talks to Holly, explains how hurtful she's being to others and herself by using her body to try to find love, and offers to help her get into the movie business if she'll change her ways and apologize to Melony. Bret and Melony become more and more involved and the spark urns into a hot flame. Melony and Bret volunteer regularly at the childrens hospital. Little Anna, Melony's favorite at the hospital dies and Melony assures a proper burial for her. To her surprise all her classmates attend. Melony's appearance is completely changed after Hailey takes her to the beauty parlor in preparation for the gala fundraiser at which Melony impress all the guests. Hailey contacts Melony's father, JOHN, about the relationship between their children. She lets him know that she read all about the fact that he is a decorated war hero. Melony and Bret enjoy a romantic senior year in high school together with their best friend Victor and Brooke. Melony still has this hang up about being flat chested. Melony and Bret spend a weekend on the lake in a romantic cottage. Bret gives her a pair of falsies. The attendant at the lake kidnaps Bret. Bret is rescued by Melony and her father. Melony and Bret have sex for the first time. Melony and Bret want go to same college and get married in order to be able to room together in their own apartment. At the wedding Bret encourages John to explore for oil on his property which is adjacent to Bret's father's oil fields. In collage Melony does great, Bret struggles to keep up. This threatens to put a strain on their marriage but actually strengthen their bond. Brooke and Victor go to separate collages. Brooke in her loneliness discovers drugs and becomes hooked on heroin. Victor finds her at a hotel bash half-naked, unconscious, and having been raped by at least four men. He gets her to a hospital and leaves heartbroken. Brooke disappears. Victor is a football star at the Naval Academy. After graduation he serves on a ship and loses his right arm in an explosion. Bret flies to Hawaii to try to bring Victor out of his depression aut Victor signs himself out of the hospital and disappears. Melony and Bret spend the ensuing years trying to track down Brooke and Victor. They graduate college and enroll in the same medical school. Holly has become a movie star but needs Hailey's help to win back the famous movie director she has fallen in love with. LANCE HOLLESTER, Bret's dad has an affair with a young costar and Hailey divorces him and comes to live with Melony and Bret. Lance has a serious accident and becomes a paraplegic. Regardless what he did to her Hailey flies out to California and brings him home. Hailey, Melony and Bret move back home to live together with Lance in the original Hollister mansion.
