Kate is eagerly anticipating being married; wrapped up in fantasies of an idyllic future with her husband-to-be, Denis. These fantasies are tainted when she discovers that Denis has inherited money from his step-brother by failing to bring up his wife and child in court. She marries him anyway, but vows to protect their son, Dick, from falling into the same immorality as his father.
