A gorgeous photography collection of home interiors and profiles of the people who have transformed these spaces into sanctuaries that will call you to dream of creating your own sacred space.
Before she became an internationally renowned designer, Carley Summers suffered from alcoholism and addiction, spending nights in jails and ERs due to crises and health scares. As someone who celebrates recovery today, Summers knows firsthand the importance of a warm and inviting home. Summers uses her life and craft as a designer to ensure that the homes she photographs and designs are comforting, healing spaces to live and grow in.
Featuring her mother's home as well as her own alongside people from Morocco, Canada, France and US states from Connecticut to California, in “Sacred Spaces”, Summers uncovers the true depth behind each home through Summers' stunning photography and Q&As with each subject: the brokenness, the hurt, and the healing it took for these people to create a sacred space that set them free. Through the interviews and photos she took of fourteen homes, Summers offers the types of sacred spaces people have created, including:
• The Foundational Home-features those who have created spaces on a solid foundation for a lasting legacy. • The Wandering Home-highlights people who were lost in life, lost in travels, but never lost in their home. • The Cathartic Home-showcases people who realize that when they cannot change the outside world, they can change the inside of their homes to bring comfort through renewal and restoration.
This collection of beautifully shot interiors alongside the vulnerable stories of their homeowners, including a mother who centered her home around her kitchen in order to heal her son with food and a woman who found healing in her beautifully designed home after overcoming childhood abuse, invites readers to dream of what their own sacred spaces could be. And for all those seeking a personal refuge in a world fraught with struggle and heartache, this collection is a balm for the weary soul.
