JoJo Mathers always thought middle school would be about friends, homework, and soccer games-not about explaining to the world who they are. On the brink of their thirteenth birthday, JoJo faces a truth that feels bigger than they ever imagined: they don't feel fully like a boy… or a girl.
When JoJo decides to share their identity as non-binary through a school essay, the fallout is immediate. Friends pull away. Their favorite teacher, Mr. Bingham, steps in to defend them-only to be suspended. With classmates whispering and a party looming that no one might attend, JoJo must rely on the love of their mom, the evolving support of their dad, and the courage within themselves to push for understanding and change at Riley Middle School.
Riley Middle School: Not He, Not She, Just Me is a moving coming-of-age story about family bonds, the pain of prejudice, and the strength it takes to be yourself. Readers who loved George by Alex Gino, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, or The Best at It by Maulik Pancholy will be captivated by JoJo's journey of resilience, friendship, and hope.
