"They carried weapons that were not like our weapons. They carried words and ideas and a way of seeing the world that was very different from ours. My grandmother said that the most dangerous weapon is not the spear but the story. Because the story changes what is inside you."
In the nineteenth century, as European missionaries, traders, and colonial officials penetrate the heart of Africa, the kingdom of Ogwashi stands at a crossroads. The village of Umuokpara-with its sacred groves, ancient traditions, and proud warrior heritage-faces an invasion unlike any it has known. The strangers bring not only guns and treaties, but something far more insidious: a war for the mind itself.
Adaeze, a young woman of uncommon wisdom and courage, finds herself caught between two worlds. As her people divide between those who embrace the newcomers' faith and those who cling to ancestral traditions, she must navigate a treacherous path of diplomacy, resistance, and survival. With her grandmother's ancient wisdom as her guide and a translator caught between loyalties as her companion, Adaeze becomes a bridge between the old and the new-a role that will cost her more than she ever imagined.
From the bustling markets and sacred ceremonies of pre-colonial Africa to the mission schools and colonial courts that reshape an entire civilization, Psychological Warfare explores the most profound conflict of all: the battle for identity, belief, and the very soul of a people.
Richly drawn and deeply human, this sweeping historical novel asks urgent questions that echo across the centuries: How do ideas transform societies? Can cultural influence achieve what armies cannot? And how do people preserve their traditions while embracing inevitable change?
Spanning generations and weaving together the perspectives of chiefs and missionaries, warriors and healers, converts and resisters, Psychological Warfare is a story of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring power of cultural identity. It is a testament to the strength of those who walk between worlds, carrying the wisdom of the ancestors into an uncertain future.
For readers of Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, this is a novel that will linger long after the final page-a powerful exploration of how the stories we tell ourselves shape who we become, and how the battle for the mind is the most important battle of all.
