Beth Thomas needed a job and a place to live. David Kane offered her both. But she didn't need to get married. Yet David was making marriage part of his offer, stating matter-of-factly that it would solve both of their problems.

David knew of Beth's past, but he'd revealed almost nothing about his own. And if he could cut his own brother out of his life, how could Beth-his wife in name only-tell David that their relationship was becoming extremely important to her?
