In the summer of 1984, the lives of several families in Dallas, Texas, intersect and unravel, revealing deep wounds, faith tested to its limits, and the complex tapestry of Black life, family, and religion.
Pastor Jason Tomlin and his formidable wife, Mattie, navigate a private crisis as Mattie battles a terminal cancer diagnosis they refuse to discuss. Their strained peace is shattered when their precocious 12-year-old daughter, Bobbi, acts out, forcing Jason to mediate between his strong-willed wife and daughter while grappling with his own traumatic past and the heavy mantle of being a "token" Black preacher in a divided world.
Their church community becomes a nexus for other stories of pain and resilience. Elex, a 14-year-old boy, is brutally beaten by his mother, Barbara, a woman hardened by her own tragic history and the pressures of poverty and colorism. His case brings him into contact with Micah, a compassionate but weary CPS worker, and into the care of Pastor Jason, reopening Jason's old family wounds involving his brother Brandon.
Meanwhile, Robin, a pregnant 17-year-old, is cast out by her church after being raped by a member. The subsequent suicide of her father, Edger-Jason's best friend-unleashes a fury in her mother, Anita, who confronts the hypocritical church leadership with a lawyer's precision and a mother's rage.
Across town, Monique, a 14-year-old aspiring photographer, witnesses the horrifying death of her best friend in a racially motivated arson attack. Her grief fuels her artistic drive, even as she forges a new, sarcastic friendship with Elex after he moves into her neighborhood.
As these individual crises build-from hospital rooms and church offices to quiet suburban streets and the heated frenzy of a Michael Jackson concert at Texas Stadium-the characters are forced to confront unforgiving realities: the failure of the church to protect its own, the crushing weight of family secrets, the systemic racism of institutions, and the desperate search for grace and forgiveness in the face of imminent loss.
Prodigal Chronicles is a raw, interconnected narrative that explores the concept of "prodigal" not as a singular son's return, but as the painful, ongoing journey of flawed individuals and a community struggling to find their way back to love, faith, and each other. It is a powerful testament to the stories we hide, the burdens we carry, and the fragile hope for redemption.
