Freja uncovers a web of academic corruption involving manipulated research, financial improprieties, and pressure on faculty to conform to donor interests. The story intertwines Freja's investigation with her rekindled relationship with Sören Bergström, her college sweetheart who is now teaching at Birchwood. Together, they navigate the complex world of academic politics, facing personal and professional risks as they pursue the truth. Key figures in the investigation include Professor Erik Andersson and graduate student Maja Bergman, initially suspected of having an improper relationship but later revealed to be whistleblowers, and Dean Lindholm, who is implicated in the corruption scandal. As Freja and Sören gather evidence, they find themselves in increasingly dangerous situations, culminating in a daring break-in to secure crucial documents. Freja ultimately exposes the scandal on national television, leading to widespread investigations and reforms in academia.
