Working in senior care isn't for everyone. It isn't even for most. But for those rare few who find their passion in this multifaceted industry, the sense of job and life satisfaction are limitless. So too, however, can be the pervasive sense of loss and hopelessness.
After graduating from university in Vancouver, Canada, Kevin Donner followed his high school sweetheart to Australia and the United States as she pursued her dream of medical school. Over the years that follow, each move forces Donner to find a new job and a new sense of purpose.
He'll find that job at Gleeful Meadows Assisted Living Facility. His new purpose? That won't take long. "Poopy Fingers: One Person's Account of Working in the Delightfully Strange World of Assisted Living" shows the daily physical and emotional needs of the residents, but more importantly, explores the varying stages of life familiar to so many of us.
Donner will fumble and stumble upon his own passion for working with, and for, this often undervalued and ignored demographic. A true celebration of life, Donner's memoir reminds us that more often than not, we don't pick our passions in life, they pick us.
