In the Greek city of Thessaloniki, a series of significant events occurred one after another in the first half of the 20th century. First, in 1917, a major fire burned down and destroyed the city's central part. Then, with the help of European specialists, the city began to be rebuilt. At that time, the hero of the novel, who lost his entire family and relatives in WWI arrived in the city from Constantinople and immediately fell in love with a girl of his nationality. The second part of the novel describes life in Thessaloniki during another event: World War II. This war, in addition to causing enormous casualties due to active operations on the battlefields, also caused death and suffering to those in the rear.The novel contains themes of selfless, honest friendship, caring attitude, and beautiful and romantic love.
