Alex Morrison has it all figured out. At twenty-two, fresh out of college with a thesis on how artificial intelligence and progressive economics can finally solve humanity's oldest problems, he's certain his generation will succeed where all others have failed. Technology is different now. The tools are better. This time, utopia is actually achievable. Then his grandfather invites him to spend a weekend at a cabin in the mountains. What begins as a casual family visit becomes a journey through centuries of human idealism-and the stubborn realities that have defeated every attempt at perfection. Over three transformative days, Alex's grandfather Robert and his father Michael walk him through a pattern that repeats across generations: young idealists convinced they've found the answer, only to discover that human nature itself makes utopia impossible.Through intimate conversations by the fire, fishing trips, and long walks in nature, three generations explore why every utopian dream has failed. Not because the dreamers weren't smart enough or their tools weren't advanced enough, but because seven fundamental aspects of human nature can't be engineered away-not by technology, not by better systems, not by good intentions. As Robert shares stories from the 1960s counterculture and Michael recounts the false promises of the internet revolution, Alex begins to see a troubling pattern. Every generation believes they're different. Every era thinks their tools will finally work. And every attempt crashes against the same unchangeable realities. But this isn't a story about giving up. It's about growing up.As the weekend unfolds, Alex learns the difference between resignation and mature engagement, between demanding perfection and working for genuine progress. He discovers that accepting human limitations isn't pessimism-it's the foundation for meaningful action. And he begins to understand that the question isn't whether utopia is possible, but how to live well and do good work in a world where it isn't.NO UTOPIA is a philosophical novel for the idealistic generation raised on technology and hope. It speaks to anyone who's looked at the world's problems and wondered why previous generations didn't fix them-and anyone who's starting to suspect the answers aren't as simple as they once seemed.Written as an accessible conversation between grandfather, father, and grandson, this book tackles big questions with warmth and wisdom: Why does inequality persist despite abundance? Why do revolutions so often end in violence? Why can't technology solve human problems? And most importantly-once you accept that perfection is impossible, how do you find meaning, purpose, and even peace? For young adults wrestling with disillusionment, for activists facing burnout, for anyone caught between idealism and cynicism, NO UTOPIA offers a third path: engaged realism. The recognition that we can't perfect the world, but we can improve it. That incremental progress matters even when it's not revolutionary. That working within reality's constraints is more effective than fighting against them. The conversation between generations has been happening for millennia. This is your invitation to join it.
