She was trained to protect everyone. She wasn't trained for him.
FBI Special Agent Mara Voss doesn't fail. Except once-in Chicago, on an operation she designed, the night her partner didn't come home. Now she's on medical leave, cleared by the review board, and unable to return to herself. Her supervisor offers her a lifeline: protect one man for six weeks in a Montana safe house. Get him to the courthouse alive. Then come back.
Eli Cade didn't ask to be protected.
He testified against Meridian Group, a financial fraud cartel that destroyed his father's retirement savings, because someone had to put his father's name where it counted. Now someone wants him dead before the trial. The FBI's solution: six weeks in rural Montana with an agent he doesn't know, in a house he didn't choose, under rules he didn't agree to.
What neither of them expected: to find, in the structure of their days-the perimeter checks, the storms, the fire, the conversations that started operational and became something else entirely-a thing that was real.
When an internal breach puts their location at risk and Mara is ordered removed from the assignment for being "too close," she has to choose: the institution that will reinstate her, or the man she's spent six weeks protecting in every sense of the word.
No Closer is a slow-burn romantic suspense about trust built under pressure, the weight of things you carry alone, and what happens when you let someone in despite every reason not to.
