Lithium and beyond-lithium battery technologies assessed in one reference
Selecting the right battery chemistry requires systematic comparison of performance, material constraints, and sustainability trade-offs across competing technologies. Next-Generation Energy Storage Systems: From Advanced Lithium to Beyond-Lithium Batteries assembles contributions from battery researchers worldwide to present structured evaluations of current and emerging electrochemical storage systems, detailing advantages, limitations, and recent advances for each technology.
Coverage spans conventional batteries, microbatteries, thin film batteries, and sustainable degradable designs. Lithium-based systems-including lithium-ion, lithium-air, and lithium-sulphur-receive detailed treatment alongside alternative chemistries such as sodium-ion, potassium-ion, and magnesium-ion batteries. Each chapter evaluates material formulations, electrochemical performance, and scalability considerations relevant to current and future battery architectures.
The book also covers:
• Comparative analysis of lithium-based versus beyond-lithium chemistries, highlighting performance metrics and practical trade-offs for each technology
• Printed battery technologies and their potential applications in flexible electronics, wearables, and distributed sensor networks
• Advances in electrode materials, electrolyte formulations, and separator design that influence cycle life and energy density
• Integration considerations for renewable energy grids, including storage capacity requirements and charge-discharge cycle optimization strategies
• Environmental and sustainability assessments of battery production, use, and end-of-life recycling across multiple electrochemical platforms
Designed for materials scientists, applied physicists, electrical engineers, and industry professionals, this reference provides the technical depth needed to evaluate competing battery chemistries. Researchers and developers gain reliable, peer-authored assessments supporting informed decisions across the full spectrum of electrochemical storage technologies.
