My First Lesson of Kindness
My First Lesson of Kindness is a gentle, heartfelt children's picture book that introduces young readers to the powerful impact of empathy, inclusion, and small acts of courage. Designed for children ages 4-8, this story helps children understand that kindness does not require grand gestures-sometimes, it begins with noticing someone and choosing to care.
The story takes place at Maple Hill School, where the playground is usually full of laughter, movement, and games. Amid the noise and excitement, one child stands out. Jase, a new student who uses a wheelchair, sits quietly under a large tree, watching the other children play. Everything around him feels unfamiliar, and he isn't sure how-or if-to join in.
Tina, a thoughtful and observant classmate, notices Jase sitting alone. She wants to say hello, but like many children, she feels unsure and shy. She wonders whether Jase wants company or prefers to be left alone. As Tina hesitates, she remembers something her mother once told her: "Kindness starts with one small try." Encouraged by this simple idea, Tina takes a deep breath and decides to walk over.
That small moment-one greeting, one smile-changes everything.
As Tina and Jase begin to talk, they discover shared interests and creative ideas. Jase loves stories about space and planets, while Tina enjoys drawing stars and rockets. Together, they begin to draw, imagine, and create. Their shared activity becomes a bridge-one that connects them not only to each other, but eventually to the other children on the playground.
Soon, curiosity replaces hesitation. Other children notice the drawings and ask to join. What begins as a quiet interaction under a tree turns into a joyful group activity filled with laughter, creativity, and teamwork. The playground transforms into a space where everyone belongs, differences are accepted, and imagination brings children together.
Throughout the story, My First Lesson of Kindness emphasizes that inclusion is not about fixing, rescuing, or changing someone-it is about making space, listening, and inviting others to be part of the moment. Jase is portrayed not by his wheelchair, but by his personality, interests, and ideas. His wheelchair is simply one part of who he is, presented naturally and respectfully.
The book uses simple, clear language that is accessible to early readers and ideal for read-aloud settings. The warm, expressive illustrations reinforce emotional cues, making it easier for children to recognize feelings such as shyness, loneliness, happiness, and pride. These visuals support comprehension and make the story especially valuable for children who benefit from visual learning.
