Mila and the Quenepa Tree" is a beautifully illustrated picture book that tells the tender, powerful story of Mila, a young girl navigating the richness and complexities of growing up with two cultures. Mila lives in a colorful city by the sea, shaped by both her Puerto Rican and Italian roots, and wasn't always sure where she belonged. Her curls felt too wild, her Spanish not fast enough, and sometimes it felt like a part of her was invisible.
As Mila tries to share her heritage, through drawings, language, and curly hair full of memories, she's often met with confusion or dismissal. But with her father's gentle encouragement, Mila finds the courage to invite her mom into her world in a way that bridges love, flavor, and tradition. And little by little, through rhythm, stories, and her family's love, she began to understand that her roots were strong, even if they didn't always show on the outside. She learned that being from somewhere can mean many things: the people who love us, the foods that comfort us, the songs we hear in the kitchen, and the stories that grow in our hearts. Whether your family comes from an island, a city, or somewhere in-between, your roots are yours. They are strong, sweet, and full of magic. Just like you.
This heartfelt tale of belonging, bicultural identity, and intergenerational understanding will resonate with children and families everywhere who have ever felt caught between worlds. A tribute to heritage, resilience, and the healing power of storytelling, Mila and the Quenepa Tree is perfect for readers ages 5-10, and for anyone who believes that every part of us deserves to be seen and celebrated.
