'Memories Like Ash' is a cozy Canadian Science Fiction adventure story with a splash of sweet romance. Set in Alberta's wild north near Slave Lake, the fictional Hamlet of Ghost Stallion Valley is the hub not only for Whirring Grouse staff and guests but also for Fiona. After an exciting meet-cute in futuristic Calgary, Beck searches for Fiona and answers to his problems. He's involved in organized crime and needs a place to start over. Because she lost a friend to violence, Fiona is both hesitant to get involved but understands that Beck must break free. Beck tells his boss that he's ready to leave the organization, and in return, he must help rescue his boss's daughter from a rival organization. After Beck gets his memory erased, he travels around the Alberta countryside, popping into many small towns searching for a new place to call home. He has dreams about Fiona and their life together. Beck struggles with his past as the reasons for his memory wipe become evident. He considers not returning to the vague idea of Fiona because he feels he isn't worthy of having love or a peaceful future. With tie-ins to the previous story and breadcrumbs for the upcoming stories, 'Memories Like Ash' is a great addition to 'The Whirring Grouse' world.
