About

Mediterranean Lattice:

Eastern Shadows over Western Mirage

"Poetry is a long, pent up scream-an echo which resounds in the secrecy of hearts."

-Al Mazini (18901949).

The following poems were written during a young girl's summer traveling alone through France, Spain, Germany and Italy. Reminders of her Arabic ancestry emerge, despite her excitement and aesthetic encounters, as she moves to discover that she is a nexus of cultural diversity. The daughter of Muslim-Palestinian mother and a Christian-Iraqi father, these poems are the products of her working through the feelings of dislocation and tension that have resulted from her being bombarded by multiple cultural influences. These poems link Eastern and Western Mediterranean cultures that have influenced the poet through her life. They are the lattices of her multi-layered heritage and upbringing. Each mesmerizing, elementally unique country inspires different poetic arrangements of sensation and sentiment-provide texture to her experience. They are "the windows" through which she peers out at the world.
